There are disciplined people, and undisciplined people. There are people who are highly structured and less structured. I am not always sure which side of these camps I fall into but I realized the other day, I have a few rules I live by. I am sure there are many others, but here are a few that come to mind:
- I never run for subways. I like to remain confident that another train will come shortly and running can only bring harm. Related to this, I think all people who insist on holding subway doors so their friends can run into the car should be fined. Holding the doors may not seem like a big deal, but it begins the domino effect of subway delays that we all bitch about.
- I don't wait in line for eggs. New York brunches are a big Saturday and Sunday morning tradition. There are several places that are always jam packed...for what reason, I do not know (a few names come to mind: EJ's, Bubby's...I think recently closed for health violations, and Sarabeth's). "Four for brunch?" "Of course, that will be 45 minutes." Ummm, no thanks. It's EGGS people.
- I also rarely wait in line for cupcakes. Magnolia cupcakes are great, but line-worthy? Not so sure.
- I obey the unstated rules of taxi hailing. For example, if you see someone on the south corner a south moving NYC street waiting for a taxi, it is very bad play to step onto the north corner to try to grab a cab before they do. It's like butting in front of someone in line. Rude rude rude!
- If I won't worry about something in a year, I try not to stress about it now.
- When packing for travel, biggest shoes go on feet. This is a rule from a friend of mine and it makes a bag lighter and allows for more efficient packing. Good rule.
- No talking in movies! I hate movie talkers. This may be more of a pet peeve than a rule.
- I don't pay a lot for something, say a pair of shoes or a piece of furniture, that is easy, readily and well knocked off by Nine West, Banana or Crate and Barrel.
- I try everything on a plate. I may not like it, but at least I have tried it.
- It's OK to rest. I know a lot of people who say they "cannot relax". Pity them! I like relaxing, am pretty good at it, and think I am all the better for it.
- All excess in moderation. I heard this from a bartender last night at the Union Square Cafe and want to make t-shirts that say this. I think it's brilliant. All excess in moderation. As Auntie Mame would say, "Live live live!"
